What Made Marilyn Monroe So Captivating & What Would Make a Modern Day Movie Star? - Ask Me!7/9/2022 What made Marilyn so captivating and iconic besides her look? What made her stand apart? Also Why do you think we don’t have any more glamorous movie stars anymore ? What do you think it would take to make a modern day movie star? Hi! Thank you for your question - it's an amazing one by the way! There are many different ways to interpret what was so special about Marilyn that captivated thousands of people in her lifetime and decades afterward. Nonetheless, here are my thoughts: Marilyn's vulnerability, how much she strived to improve herself, and her overall kindness and humbleness mesmerized many. Marilyn was very open about her life, especially her childhood. In interviews, she would often speak of her time in and out of foster homes, her mental health, etc. All of which made Marilyn more relatable - possibly making people think, 'Well if Marilyn went through all that and ended up rich and famous, then why can't I?' if not simply causing people to root for her. Moreover, Marilyn leaving Hollywood to study acting in New York showed how important acting was to her and her determination to become a serious actress. Those who doubted her ability were proven wrong and shown how capable she was - even more so considering Hollywood actors were often looked down on by theatre actors. I also believe that people could tell through the press how grateful Marilyn was for all she received. All of her charitable works, love, and appreciation for her fans made her even more adored by the public. Overall, I think people could sense her personality and intentions through the screen and/or radio. Quotes on Marilyn & her fans: “I want to say to the people, if I am a star, the people made me a star, No studio, no person, but the people did." - Marilyn, 1962 “Sometimes wearing a scarf and a polo coat and no makeup and with a certain attitude of walking, I go shopping or just look at people living. But then you know, there will be a few teenagers who are kind of sharp and they'll say, ‘Hey, just a minute. You know who I think that is?’ And they'll start tailing me. And I don't mind. I realize some people want to see if you're real. The teenagers, the little kids, their faces light up. They say, ‘Gee,’ and they can't wait to tell their friends. And old people come up and say, ‘Wait till I tell my wife.’ You've changed their whole day. In the morning, the garbage men that go by 57th Street when I come out the door say, ‘Marilyn, hi! How do you feel this morning?’ To me, it's an honor, and I love them for it. “Marilyn gave her fans the credit for her fame. She felt she never had respect from the Hollywood studios and only her adoring fans really understood her and they had made her a star.” — Richard Meryman (journalist for Life magazine that interviewed Marilyn for, what would be, her last interview in 1962) “During the filming of the Misfits, I was teenager who was there as an extra. I have a photo of me with Marilyn signing her autograph for me. …I swear on a stack of Bibles, everything about Marilyn was heaven sent (or is that heaven scent). We were both holding the paper while she signed the autograph. … When I asked Marilyn for the autograph, the man standing behind her in the photo told her not to stop for autographs and said she needed to get to the shoot. Marilyn just ignored him and was extremely nice to me (I think he may have been her masseur, he also had a small part in the Misfits as well). As I recall she called me sweetie or something similar (I admit that was an awful long time ago and memories do fade).” - Steve Armstrong During the golden age of Hollywood there were many glamourous movie stars - including Marilyn (of course), Jimmy Stewart, Judy Garland, Lauren Bacall, Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, Bette Davis, Greta Garbo, etc. However, today there genuinely aren't any glamourous movie stars. The lack of true stars today is likely a tribute to the significantly relaxed studio contracts/codes. In the 30s, 40s, 50s, and early 60s, there were rules actors and actresses had to follow if they wanted to act. This included living up to their image and overall being ladies and gentlemen - whatever that entailed. Studios had more control over their actors than the actors did themselves. Now those codes no longer exist. The presence of social media gave actresses and actors more control over their public appearance as well, allowing them to show off more of their life. All of which caused people to realize celebrities are human just like everyone else. Furthermore, the overall casualness of society today almost totally defeats the definition of glamour. Now even though a celebrity may be able to afford more expensive pieces, it doesn't always look like it - with all due respect to today's rich and famous - it's simply the popular fashion of today. And that isn't even considering the lack of mannerisms in the modern day society. To make a glamourous modern-day celebrity would require an old-fashioned sense of style, limited social media presence, appearing in high-quality and meaningful films, and overall attaining grace and proper mannerisms. It would certainly be challenging in today's world, but I think it could be possible with the right person - whoever that may be. Thank you so, so much for your question! I really enjoyed answering it!
