Marilyn Monroe. Say the name and almost everyone can put the face to the name. She is still iconic today, even though her passing occurred over 59 years ago. Some may wonder, 'why is that?'. You could say it's because of her glamour, beauty, movie-star status, or even her tragic death. But there are plenty of celebrities who experienced all of the above and aren't as popular and well-known as Marilyn is today. What makes Marilyn so special?
1. She was vocal about issues she had/was experiencing: Just until recently, speaking out about mental health or abuse was not common. However, Marilyn was very vocal about her sexual abuse (she speaks about this in her autobiography- ghostwritten by Ben Hecht- My Story) as a child. Marilyn also was very open about her mental health; she never tried to hide the fact that wasn't happy and content 24/7. 2. People can relate to her: Marilyn was never quiet about her life experiences and never tried to hide who she was inside. People can relate to reality and that is what she portrayed. Her sharing her experiences growing up in and out of foster homes and waiting in line with her mom in the stale bread line makes her relatable. Not that everyone had to endure and experience that, but it makes her more personable and human, than someone who strictly portrays their life as perfection since birth. 3. She had a je ne sais quoi about her: I know... very specific, but it's true! She had this magic to her personality, that made people like and admire her, even if they were born years after she left us for heaven. 4. Marilyn gives people hope: Marilyn left behind what she knew she didn't want to be a part of her life as an adult. She wanted a home of her own. She wanted to have a good income. Marilyn worked hard for those things and achieved it. She is proof that just because you are born into a certain situation, does not at all mean your adult life has to be the same. You have the power to change your life for the better. While I'm sure there are many more reasons Marilyn is still so loved today, that's all I could manage to think of at the moment, but I think it covers most of the bases. If you can think of any others, please feel free to write them down below. I'd love to hear them! I hope you have a wonderful day and keep a good thought for Marilyn! :)
