Biopic Definition: "a movie dramatizing the life of a particular person, typically a public or historical figure." "I am not a victim of emotional conflicts. I am human." The new film Blonde has received a plethora of press because even after sixty years, the name Marilyn Monroe generates excitement. Initially I was ecstatic to hear that a high-quality picture of Marilyn was in the works. However, once I learned more, I was both frustrated and disappointed. Blonde has been labeled a biopic in numerous articles, which is completely false. Rather, it is based on a fictional book released in 1999 by Joyce Carol Oates, with Marilyn as the protagonist. The filmmakers claim they they are trying to portray how "human" Marilyn was but then completely disregard her personal human experience to present a faux version of her life. The fact that Marilyn's namesake is again being used for profit by people who have no respect for her life, legacy, or what she went through is immensely disheartening. Instead, Marilyn's life has to be more dramatic...more interesting...more disturbing ( Blonde has received a rating of NC-17, due to explicit content involving a rumored sexual assault.). And apparently fictional. Another notable feature in this film is Marilyn's name being the only character referred to by name. Arthur Miller is referred to as the "The Playwright", Joe DiMaggio is "The Ex-Athlete" and John F. Kennedy is "The President." Lastly, it is implied that Marilyn was "discovered" and pulled into the film industry, making her appear as a victim - which is inaccurate and takes away from how hard Marilyn worked. Marilyn herself wrote, "after all nothing was or is being given to you- you have had none of this work thrown your way you sought it- it didn't seek you." Marilyn deserves to be acknowledged and respected for who she was and all she accomplished. She was a human being and deserves the decency all humans do. Marilyn most definitely should not and need not be a fictional story to become loved or accepted. "Those people that have been writing all those lies about me. All I know, it's their problem. Those people, I don't even know [them], or if we have met, it's been brief. Can I take it? Are you kidding? I'm used to it, and [remember] the old saying: 'Consider the source.'" I will not be watching Blonde as I know that watching a fictional version of Marilyn Monroe's life with an unnecessary, disturbing dark premise will only make me frustrated and anxious. The fact that Blonde is produced by people who apparently don't respect Marilyn doesn't help either. Anyways...
