Marilyn Monroe: Not an Object to Profit From & The Problem With the Marilyn Monroe Estate10/30/2021 Marilyn Monroe has been deemed an icon and a legend by many. A lot of people don't even remember the first time they laid eyes on Marilyn; she was just always present in some way or another. For that, it is easy- for the media especially- to forget that she was an actual human being. This has caused different people and medias to completely disrespect Marilyn, her life, and the challenges she had to overcome. The Blonde Film For example, the upcoming film Blonde (one of many completely inaccurate and hurtful media representations of Marilyn, made to simply make a profit). At first, I was quite excited for the upcoming film and planned on watching it. However, once I figured out more about it, my heart hurt. Apparently the film is to be rated NC-17- meaning that under no circumstances can a minor be admitted into seeing the film. It has also been reported that once Netflix was shown the cut for the film, they asked the director to tone down the sexual content. The fact that Netflix thought the original cut of the film was too disturbing to be produced for adults, scares me even for what the final cut will look like. Furthermore, the film is based off of a fictional book. I can't help but believe that people will run with what they 'learn' from the film and take it legitimately. I think it is horrible for anyone to expose someone's private life (which I think is wrong to begin with) in such an inappropriate way and be making money off it. Marilyn deserves better. The Marilyn Monroe Estate Marilyn's Monroe own estate is disappointingly a problem that seems to only want to make money off of the name Marilyn made for herself. This is especially unfortunate because her estate could have been used for, what I think, would have made Marilyn happy. Such as donating a large sum to charities Marilyn supported and sharing information that would allow everyone to truly get to know who Marilyn was and what she stood for. But instead the estate, run by Anna Strasberg and CMG Worldwide- both of whom Marilyn never intended be running her estate- choose to use Marilyn for other things. These of course include making a profit. For instance, Marilyn Monroe's estate sold mostly all of Marilyn Monroe's things in the 1999 Christie's Auction. This was against Marilyn's wishes, which I'm sure they must have known, because of how in her will and last testament she stated: "I give and bequeath all of my personal effects and clothing to LEE STRASBERG, or if he should predecease me, then to my Executor hereinafter named, it being my desire that he distribute these, in his sole discretion, among my friends, colleagues and those to whom I am devoted." No where in her will does it state that she wanted practically all of her belongings to go to whoever bid the highest. (For more information on why and how Marilyn's estate landed in the hands of Anna Strasberg, who later sold some of the estate to CMG Worldwide, you may find reading this blog post helpful!) Moreover, the Marilyn Monroe Estate continues to make, what seems like constant, product deals- some of which have nothing to do with Marilyn. For example, her estate does brand deals for jewelry, makeup, rugs, etc. I understand making product deals including jewelry and makeup, for Marilyn Monroe is considered a beauty icon, but selling rugs (?) leads me to believe her estate doesn't think before agreeing to deals. Or even worse, they do think but simply don't care.... as long as it makes them a profit. While doing this, the Marilyn Monroe Estate continues to post inaccurate information and quotes on their website and social medias. My thoughts on the Marilyn Monroe Estate would change significantly if only they would consider whether or not the product deal makes sense to the persona that is Marilyn Monroe and would share accurate information. There are many other examples of Marilyn Monroe's name she made for herself being used and exposed simply to make money, but I think those two main examples above give you the main idea.
To the Marilyn Monroe Estate, medias, and people that use Marilyn's name to simply make money without considering the fact that she was a real-life person with feelings: please stop and respect Marilyn. Thank you for reading this far and I hope you have a wonderful day! Hold a good thought for Marilyn today and always! ♥
